The SANITA Sustainable Cities project, implemented between 2019 and 2024 through a partnership between the European Union and UN-Habitat, was designed to strengthen sustainable and inclusive urban planning in Guinea. The initiative supported the Government of Guinea in developing strategic planning tools, improving urban governance, and strengthening institutional capacities to address the challenges of rapid urbanization.
The project demonstrated that integrated urban planning, underpinned by institutional collaboration and stakeholder participation, can provide a solid foundation for sustainable urban development in Guinea. Its long-term impact depends on the continued implementation of the planning instruments developed and on sustained government commitment to inclusive, resilient, and well-managed urban growth.
As part of this initiative, and to support the implementation and governance of these planning instruments, we developed for UN-Habitat a lightweight web-based geospatial platform to publish the Greater Conakry Territorial Plan. The platform was specifically designed to operate on low-cost managed servers, deliver low-latency performance, and be maintained directly by government technical staff responsible for the preparation and management of the urban plan.
The platform’s ultimate objective is to strengthen the digital sovereignty of urban planning data by enabling it to be stored, managed, and maintained entirely within Guinea, without relying on external infrastructure. By making the territorial plan publicly accessible, this tool also represents an important step toward greater institutional transparency, providing citizens with direct access to a key urban planning instrument.
