General Theory of Urbanization

How do we interpret big data from other eras?

The second volume of the General Theory of Urbanization published in 1867 by Ildefons Cerdà boasts more than 700 pages of statistical description of 19th century Barcelona. It is a key document for understanding not just the birth of urbanism as science but also the basis of the Eixample project, which shaped the Barcelona we know today.

We digitized and translated this data into interactive visualizations to tell a story, during which users can consult original sources while learning about the city’s history.
