Vcity proximity

A human centered digital twin

vCity is a people-centred urban digital twin platform developed by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). It creates virtual replicas of cities to simulate the impact of urban policies and interventions, from mobility and air quality to sustainability and access to services, before they are implemented, enabling more informed, transparent and sustainable planning.

Within this project, our team was responsible for designing and building the web platform that connects to the vCity API, making it possible to consume and present simulation results in an intuitive way.

The resulting tool gives public administration technicians, urban planners and citizens an accessible way to evaluate different urban design scenarios and see how different public policies can help move towards a more balanced, sustainable city that improves quality of life.

As part of this work, we also developed the platform’s proximity module. This tool analyses cities through the lens of proximity, visualising how accessible vital public services are to citizens. With this insight, urban policy makers can easily identify the need for different facilities in each neighbourhood. Users can compare Spanish cities and neighbourhoods through indicators such as average proximity time and a proximity equality index, break this down by type of service (culture, education, health, retail) and by age group, giving policy makers a clear, comparable picture of where to prioritise new facilities.
