In this regional study, we assessed the impact of innovation business activities on the Barcelona metropolitan area under the notion that the urban fabric has a significant influence on the appeal and emergence of different spatial and economic models.
We worked to identify what these initiatives are – from start-ups to well-known references in each sector, innovation support infrastructure and research centers – and what synergies exist between them.
At the same time, we characterized urban fabrics based on multiple urbanistic parameters, such as building density, the mix of surface area uses and proximity to various modes of transport, to establish five relevant typologies.
Lastly, based on our observations and using predictive analysis, we evaluated the territorial potential for welcoming new innovation activities and boosting already existing ones. We also provided recommendations on how to orient urban planning and economic public policies.
